INTEGRATED WASTE WATER MANAGEMENT IN COUNTRY HOUSES

SAVE YOUR WATER was created with the aim of addressing the Integrated Management of Wastewater in a sustainable way and valuing one of the most scarce resources in the Balearic Islands: water. The scarcity of water resources in the Balearic Islands, the current unsustainable management of wastewater in homes without connection to the sewer and the ability to reuse household wastewater for irrigation have been the drivers for the creation of our project, in accordance with the current regulations of the Hydrological Plan of the Balearic Islands.

On the one hand, the scarcity of water resources in Mallorca led me to make it a priority to properly manage wastewater on the country house where I have lived for 8 years. On the other hand, my training as a biologist and my professional experience of more than 15 years in aquatic ecology enabled me to implement a wastewater treatment and regeneration system, using a septic tank and a phytoremediation system, with which I could reuse up to 85% of the wastewater generated in the house for irrigation, as well as avoiding the discharge of polluting effluents from the septic tank into the ground.

As a result, there has been significant water savings (80%). No less important has been the avoidance of soil and groundwater contamination with excess nutrients, excess organic matter and pathogenic microorganisms. It should be remembered that groundwater is the main water resource of the Balearic Islands, representing 72% of the total water resources.
